Yes they can keep their old weapon. There aren't many people with 5x atk and 5x def, so there's no need to change it. Even if they do have it's probably 41-42 max, so they would only have a couple more stats than others

5 line def or attack weapon doesn't mean anything since it can't be honed. 5 line is around 1 in 70 chance.
35-37 will be standard now.
Hard part is getting 38+
