One of my first brain screw anime: It was gory, but at the same time is wonderful, because it showed how even the most innocent have a breaking point. I won't spoil anything, but I highly suggest anything by Satoshi Kon.
But my first anime I actually CRIED to was "Grave of the Fireflies." I couldn't stop crying because it had such a profound effect on me. Just watch it and you'll see what I mean.
