Month/day/year:
This format was traditional in England, whence it was brought to America since the 1700s. We simply have not changed that tradition.
This is called the middle-endian system.

Since the 1900s the English have begun to use the Day/Month/Year format (again).
This is called the little-endian system

With the advent of computers, YYYY/MM/DD (ISO 8601) is by far the best format. Everything gets sorted in files in chronological order.
Most of Asia uses this order.
It's called the big-endian system

It all comes down to organization of data.

On another note:
We avoid the 2 number year format (e.g. 89/12/26) now because it causes problems in hexadecimal coding, blah blah blah (look up y2k bug).
