I play every single class. With -6 ct gears on archer, mage is still better unless you got good 3rd stats on -6 parts.

If you want to get an ea with gears like yours truly, full -9, int, def, and dph, then it'll be expensive but worth it in the end if you can script between them! But if you are going for average good gear, 2x ct on all with a xbow ea is easier to gear. Other than that mage is easier to gear! In 1v1 good geard ea's will destroy mages no questions asked, and in mass pk both are equally efficient, ea for insane AA  + DD + Range, Mage, shorter range but damage still as good + CC capabilities + that retarded reversion skill like OMG PLS GM REMOVE!

In terms of suitability it just depends on how well you know your class  +   gear! But for me ea is easier to survive on than mage.

Wizard without good channeling does not provide lot of fun - it is pretty hard and might be frustrating, however with good gear it is much more fun than EA but also a bit harder class.
EA is both fun and it is pretty easy for sage EAs to get channeling.

With ea you can choose between APS and Chan, whichever you find easier to get better r8 for and whichever is more fun
Getting good gears relies on how lucky you are when it comes to rerolling
Like Alexy said, a mg without decent channeling can be highly frustrating and not fun at all
I'd say start with ea first then after that go with mg, unless you only want one char
